Spiced up Bone Broth

If you haven’t heard about all the glorious benefits about bone broth, we’re going to give you a little reminder of why this nutrient packed broth should be in your diet. Bone broth is much different than your “average broth or stock”. We’re talking about a broth that has been slow cooked for more than 24 hours. All those nutrients from the vegetables and bones seep into the water so when it’s strained you’re left with a nutrient-packed, gut-healing, joint-loving, immune-supporting broth. What are these magical healing properties? Why are they so important? 1.  Gut health     Having a healthy gut is extremely important. Without a properly functioning digestive system you may experience gas, bloating, cramping, a compromised immune system and poor absorption. All of these symptoms could lead to other serious health concerns. Bone broth contains gelatin which helps repair the gut lining. This is very helpful for those with food sensitivities and leaky gut as it promotes healing, allowing those food sensitivities to become tolerable once again.

Ever wonder what that layer of “fat” is that hardens on top of your soup container? That’s the collagen and gelatin (the breakdown of collagen). Collagen is a gel like substance that contains many essential amino acids such as glutamine, glycine and proline that help with gut healing. Glutamine helps protect the gut lining, proline helps repair, while glycine helps prevent breakdown of muscle tissue. All of these work together to prevent, protect and heal the gut.

2. Joint Health Collagen helps create a smooth layer between our bones acting like a cushion to help relieve some joint pain. Minerals such as magnesium, calcium and potassium are found in bone broth which are essential for good bone health and bone density.

3. Immune Support Did you ever wonder why you grew up knowing that chicken noodle soup would make everything better? It’s because traditionally it was made with chicken bones and veggies leftover from dinner, creating this powerful bone broth. The majority of our immune system resides in our gut. The good bacteria in our gut help to fight off those nasty bugs that pass through. If you have compromised digestion, food sensitivities, and leaky gut, your immune system is at risk. Among the benefits of collagen and gelatin, bone broth contains minerals and electrolytes that help replenish our bodies when we fall ill. Luckily for us we have many awesome local bone broth companies that source their bones from local organic and free range farms and do all the hours of boiling for us!
